What Are Wisdom Teeth?

Wisdom teeth — also called third molars — are the last set of teeth to develop, usually appearing between the ages of 17 and 25. Most people have four wisdom teeth, one in each corner of the mouth, but some have fewer or none at all.

The problem is that most jaws simply don’t have enough room for these extra molars.

When there isn’t enough space, wisdom teeth can:

Not every wisdom tooth needs to be removed. But when they’re causing pain, infection, or threatening the health of your other teeth, extraction is the most effective treatment.

Signs Your Wisdom Teeth May Need to Come Out

You may need wisdom teeth extraction if you’re experiencing:

Pain or tenderness at the back of your jaw

especially behind your last molars

Swollen, red, or bleeding gums

near the back of your mouth

Difficulty opening your mouth fully

or jaw stiffness

Recurring infections

in the gum tissue around a partially erupted tooth

Bad breath or an unpleasant taste

that doesn't go away with brushing — often caused by trapped food and bacteria

Pressure or shifting

of your other teeth — wisdom teeth can push neighboring teeth out of alignment

Even if you’re not in pain, your dentist may recommend extraction based on X-rays that show the wisdom teeth are positioned in a way that will likely cause problems in the future.

Understanding Wisdom Tooth Impaction

Not all wisdom teeth extractions are the same. The complexity of your procedure depends on how the tooth is positioned:

Erupted (Fully Visible)

The wisdom tooth has fully broken through the gum and is visible in the mouth. This is the simplest type of extraction — similar to removing any other tooth.

Soft Tissue Impaction

The tooth has partially broken through the bone but is still covered by gum tissue. The gum needs to be opened to access and remove the tooth.

Partial Bony Impaction

The tooth is partially trapped in the jawbone. A portion of bone needs to be removed to extract the tooth safely.

Full Bony Impaction

The tooth is completely enclosed within the jawbone. This is the most complex type of extraction and requires careful surgical technique to remove the tooth without affecting the surrounding structures.

At Village Dental Group, Dr. Ahmed Rabie evaluates each case individually using digital X-rays to determine the exact position of your wisdom teeth and plan the safest, most comfortable approach for removal.

What to Expect During Your Wisdom Teeth Extraction

Knowing what to expect before, during, and after your procedure can make a big difference in how comfortable you feel. Here’s what happens at Village Dental Group:

Consultation & X-Rays

Dr. Rabie examines your mouth and takes digital X-rays or a panoramic image to see the exact position, angle, and root development of each wisdom tooth. Based on this, he'll explain whether extraction is needed and what type of procedure to expect.

Anesthesia & Comfort

On the day of your procedure, we apply local anesthesia to fully numb the extraction area. For patients who are particularly anxious or having multiple teeth removed, sedation options may be discussed during your consultation. We do not begin until you're completely comfortable.

Tooth Extraction

For erupted teeth, Dr. Rabie loosens and removes the tooth using specialized instruments. For impacted teeth, a small incision is made in the gum, and if necessary, a small amount of bone is removed to access the tooth. The tooth may be sectioned (divided into smaller pieces) for easier, less invasive removal.

Cleaning & Stitches

The extraction site is cleaned thoroughly to remove any debris or infection. Dissolvable stitches are placed if needed — these typically dissolve on their own within 7–10 days.

Gauze & Initial Recovery

We place gauze over the extraction site to control bleeding and begin clot formation. You'll rest in our office for a short period while we monitor your initial recovery and make sure you're feeling stable.

Post-Op Instructions

Before you leave, our team provides detailed aftercare instructions covering pain management, diet, swelling, oral hygiene, and warning signs to watch for. We make sure you — and whoever is driving you home — understand everything clearly.

Does wisdom teeth extraction hurt?

The procedure itself is painless — we use effective local anesthesia to completely numb the area before any work begins. You may feel pressure during the extraction, but you should not feel pain. After the anesthesia wears off, some soreness and swelling is normal for 2–3 days and is manageable with prescribed or over-the-counter pain medication.

How long does recovery take after wisdom teeth removal?

Most patients return to normal activities within 3–5 days. Swelling typically peaks on days 2–3 and then gradually improves. Full healing of the extraction sites takes 1–2 weeks. We provide detailed aftercare instructions to help you recover as quickly and comfortably as possible.

Do all four wisdom teeth need to be removed at once?

Not necessarily. Some patients only need one or two removed. However, if all four are problematic or positioned in a way that will likely cause future issues, removing them in a single appointment is often more efficient and means one recovery period instead of multiple. Dr. Rabie will recommend the best approach based on your X-rays.

How much does wisdom teeth extraction cost in Anaheim?

Cost depends on the number of teeth being removed, the complexity of the extraction (erupted vs. impacted), and your insurance coverage. We accept all PPO insurance, Medi-Cal, and offer CareCredit financing. Call us at (714) 535-7500 for a personalized estimate — we verify your coverage before your visit at no charge.

What is dry socket and how do I prevent it?

Dry socket occurs when the blood clot at the extraction site becomes dislodged, exposing the underlying bone and nerves. It can cause significant pain. To prevent it: avoid using straws for at least 5 days, do not smoke for at least 72 hours, avoid vigorous rinsing for the first 24 hours, and follow all aftercare instructions carefully. If you develop dry socket, call our office immediately — we can treat it quickly.

Can I eat after wisdom teeth extraction?

Yes, but stick to soft, cool foods for the first 1–2 days — think yogurt, smoothies, mashed potatoes, and applesauce. Avoid hot foods, spicy foods, and anything crunchy or hard until the extraction sites begin to heal. You can gradually return to normal foods as comfort allows, usually within 5–7 days.

What age is best for wisdom teeth removal?

The ideal age is typically between 17 and 25, when the roots are not yet fully developed and the bone around the teeth is less dense — making the procedure simpler and recovery faster. However, wisdom teeth can be safely removed at any age if they’re causing problems. Dr. Rabie evaluates each case individually.
